For the March challenge, Aurifil are setting an Italy-themed Color Builder box challenge for the Island batik Ambassadors to create a piece inspired by our assigned Italian destination. It could be a city scene, a landscape, something you associate with the location…

I was given the Auriful thread Carrara, which is best known for its beautiful marble
The luxury stone comes the Apuan Alps, a mountain range in northern Tuscany that stretches for 58 km and reaches 2,000 meters high. Marble has been carved here since the Ancient Roman times, and because of its millennial history, the Carrara quarries have produced more marble than any other place on Earth
So I decided to create a marble fireplace
See my quilt take shape below...
The green Island Batik fabric was laid to look like wall paper, and a wooden floor affect with the brown. I added flames and logs to the fireplace
I used all three of the Aurifil thread to create the marble effect on my fireplace, and completed the top quilt with free motion quilting the main fireplace to help it stand out
I added a cute Island Batik lizard wall hanging to the background using FMQ
I sandwiched my quilt with Hobbs silk batting, and quilting it with simple lines, to give the effect of wallpaper strips
This wall hanging was completed with island Batik black solid binding, hand sewn to the reverse for a super neat finish
